On Wednesday afternoon, before the rains returned, I decided to take my son (4yr) and niece (1yr) to the playground. We took a short ride to Blackstone River Greenway. This pathway is a fun way to explore the Blackstone Valley, whether by bike, rollerblades, or on foot. Currently, this pathway consists of over 24 miles. Still in construction, the vision is for it to extend 48 miles from downtown Worcester, MA, to India Point Park in Providence, RI.
The playground is located along the pathway in Blackstone, MA. We arrived around 3:30 pm and even though plenty of people were taking advantage of the walkway, there were no others in the playground.
This small-sized playground would not be the main attraction for a day out, however, is a great addition to the walkway for anyone looking to get outside. Mostly consisting of climbing structures made of rope, I would imagine that any child under 4 would have a difficult time. We spent most of our time in the Merry Go Round Net Climber
The base of the playground is one continuous rubber mat that is colored to follow the river. This is by far my favorite playground flooring! No debris that may cause falls but soft and forgiving enough if a fall should occur. The best part is we don't take any of it home with us!
PLAYGROUND FACTS & RATING:(out of 10)
Parking: 7: Medium-sized lined parking lot available. It is a 6 min walk from the lot to the playground.
Bathrooms: 4: I saw 1 handicapped accessible port-a-potty located in the parking lot.
Safety: 4: No apparent broken equipment. Lacking confidence in the distance between the street and the playground. Although there was a guard rail at the street entrance and a small wooden fence at the playground entrance, there was only about 12 feet between the two and a large opening allowing street access.
Cleanliness: 6.5: The playground was moderately clean. There were a few pieces of trash and some graffiti on the equipment during the visit. I also noticed the lack of trash receptacles in the playground area itself.
Equipment: 5: With only a handful of climbing structures I would not plan a visit specifically for the playground. I will add that there are no slides, no swings, or "toddler" structures.
Overall: 5.3: Great addition to the pathway for anyone looking to get outside. My little one became bored quickly and preferred to see how fast he could run down the pathway and look for ducks in the river. Would recommend ages 4+
